Valdosta, Ga. – Heavy rain threatens South Georgia and North Florida tonight as a Flood Watch stretches across dozens of counties through early Sunday morning, raising concerns for flash flooding in both urban neighborhoods and rural roads. Roads may become impassable in cities like Valdosta, Albany, Moultrie, and as far south as Jacksonville, where rainfall totals could top five inches in some locations before dawn.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Tallahassee and Jacksonville, slow-moving thunderstorms and a saturated atmosphere will drop repeated rounds of rain from Albany and Thomasville, Georgia, down through Jacksonville and Fernandina Beach, Florida. Isolated areas could see as much as seven inches, with the greatest flooding risk expected along smaller creeks, streams, and city streets—especially where drainage is poor.
Officials urge drivers to avoid any water-covered roadways, as rapidly rising creeks and sudden ponding could strand vehicles or block access overnight. Those living near flood-prone areas should have a plan to move to higher ground if warnings are issued. The threat is greatest through 4 a.m. in South Georgia and 2 a.m. in North Florida, but additional showers remain possible into Sunday morning.
Residents are urged to monitor local alerts and be ready for further flood warnings as the situation develops.
