Jacksonville, Fla. – North Florida and parts of southeast Georgia will swelter under extreme heat Sunday as a heat advisory goes into effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with heat index values expected to reach a dangerous 112°F.
According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, the advisory covers all of northeast and north central Florida—including Gainesville, Ocala, and Lake City—as well as southeast Georgia cities like Waycross, Brunswick, and Douglas. The combination of high temperatures and stifling humidity poses a significant risk for heat-related illnesses, especially for those without access to air conditioning.
Cities across Duval, Alachua, Columbia, and Flagler counties are urged to take precautions. Outdoor workers and vulnerable groups should limit activity during peak heat hours. Officials recommend staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and avoiding direct sun exposure. Residents are also encouraged to check on neighbors, especially the elderly and those without cooling.
This marks one of the hottest weekends of the summer so far, with heat indexes exceeding typical July averages. Similar advisories may extend into early next week depending on regional temperatures and humidity trends.
⚠️ Heat alerts remain active through Sunday evening. Additional advisories may follow if conditions persist.
