Tallahassee, Fla. – Triple-digit heat index values will blanket much of the Florida Panhandle and southwest Georgia today, as a heat advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. EDT (6 p.m. CDT). Feels-like temperatures could reach as high as 112°F, raising the risk of heat-related illnesses for outdoor workers and vulnerable populations.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, the advisory covers areas from Central Walton County in Florida to Lowndes County in Georgia, including cities like Tallahassee, Panama City, Albany, and Valdosta. In North Walton County, a separate advisory warns of heat index values up to 108°F until 6 p.m. CDT.
Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, and avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours. Local emergency officials advise checking on elderly neighbors and ensuring pets have shade and water. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and air conditioning are critical tools in avoiding heat exhaustion or stroke.
This extreme heat is typical for late July but could intensify localized drought and wildfire conditions. More advisories may follow if heat persists into Monday.
