Tallahassee, FL – A sharp blast of winter cold is settling across North Florida and South Georgia tonight, bringing the coldest conditions of the season so far and prompting safety reminders from the National Weather Service.

According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, overnight low temperatures are expected to fall into the mid-20s to near 30 degrees across much of the region, with colder inland locations dipping into the lower 20s. Gusty winds will make it feel significantly colder, with wind chill values dropping into the low to mid-teens overnight and into early Monday morning.

Forecasters say communities including Tallahassee, Bainbridge, Albany, Dothan, Marianna, Valdosta, and Perry could experience wind chills between 12 and 20 degrees by daybreak. Coastal areas will be slightly milder but still cold enough to pose risks for exposed pipes, sensitive plants, and pets left outdoors.

The National Weather Service warns that prolonged exposure to these conditions can be dangerous, particularly for children, the elderly, and those without adequate shelter. Frostbite can develop on exposed skin in a short period of time when wind chills fall into the teens.

Officials urge residents to take precautions tonight by limiting time outdoors, dressing in warm layers, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Pet owners are advised to bring animals indoors if possible and ensure food and water sources do not freeze. Homeowners should protect exposed pipes by insulating them, opening sink cabinets to allow warm air circulation, and disconnecting outdoor hoses.

In addition to the overnight cold, temperatures Monday afternoon are expected to remain cool, with highs struggling to reach the 40s across much of North Florida.

Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring local forecasts and weather alerts for updates as the cold snap moves through the region.
