FARGO, North Dakota – With Thanksgiving travel fast approaching, North Dakota officials are reminding drivers to prepare vehicles now for the long, harsh winter ahead. From Fargo to Bismarck, motorists are urged to complete maintenance checks and gather emergency supplies before snow, ice, and subzero temperatures settle in later this month.
According to the North Dakota Department of Transportation, early November is the best time to check tire tread, test batteries, top off antifreeze, and replace wiper blades. Officials also recommend keeping a full winter emergency kit in every car — including a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, high-energy snacks, bottled water, and traction material such as sand or kitty litter.
Drivers planning Thanksgiving trips along I-94, U.S. 2, and I-29 should expect heavy traffic and potentially changing conditions across open plains. “North Dakota’s cold season can turn dangerous quickly,” an NDDOT spokesperson said. “A prepared vehicle and driver can make the difference between a safe arrival and a serious emergency.” Motorists are also encouraged to keep gas tanks at least half full, carry extra clothing, and check ND511.gov for real-time road, plow, and weather information.
With the winter driving season beginning, officials emphasize that preparation now helps ensure safe, reliable travel across North Dakota’s highways and rural routes as families head out for Thanksgiving gatherings.
