Bismarck, North Dakota – Strong northwest winds are sweeping across much of North Dakota early Tuesday, producing hazardous travel conditions and blowing debris from the Canadian border through the central plains. The National Weather Service in Bismarck has kept a Wind Advisory in effect until 7 a.m. CDT / 6 a.m. MDT Tuesday, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph.

According to forecasters, sustained winds near 35 mph are being reported from Minot and Rugby south through Bismarck, Jamestown, and LaMoure. The strongest gusts are occurring over open terrain in Burleigh, Ward, and Emmons counties, where unsecured items and high-profile vehicles are most at risk.

Drivers along Interstate 94 and U.S. Highway 83 should use extra caution, especially when passing trucks or crossing exposed overpasses. The National Weather Service urges residents to secure outdoor decorations, garbage bins, and lightweight equipment that could be blown around overnight.

According to North Dakota emergency management officials, the winds will gradually diminish after sunrise as the pressure gradient relaxes. Cooler, calmer weather is expected through midweek before another disturbance may bring light rain and breezy conditions by Thursday.
