Bismarck, N.D. – A sharp fall chill will grip much of North Dakota tonight as a Freeze Warning takes effect for nearly the entire state, following a day of powerful west winds gusting up to 55 mph. Lows are expected to drop well below freezing by dawn Monday, threatening any remaining crops, gardens, or outdoor plumbing.
According to the National Weather Service in Bismarck, the Wind Advisory remains in effect for both the north and southwest regions until this evening, with the Freeze Warning beginning around 8 p.m. CDT and lasting through 10 a.m. Monday. The warning area covers cities including Bismarck, Minot, Williston, Dickinson, and Rugby, where temperatures will fall into the mid-20s.
Drivers on I-94, U.S. 83, and U.S. 2 should expect crosswinds and areas of blowing dust through sunset before calmer, colder air arrives. Power outages are not expected, but unsecured items like trash bins and patio furniture could be tossed around until winds subside late tonight.
Residents are urged to protect exposed pipes, bring pets indoors, and cover tender plants. “It’s the coldest air of the season so far,” forecasters said, marking a clear shift toward late-fall conditions across the northern Plains. Highs Monday will struggle to reach the upper 30s before a gradual warm-up midweek.
