Grand Forks, North Dakota – Drivers across eastern North Dakota and adjacent parts of northwest Minnesota should prepare for slick and potentially hazardous travel conditions Sunday as a wintry mix spreads into the region and lingers through the evening hours. Snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and patches of ice could develop quickly, especially during the afternoon and early evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, confidence is high that winter travel impacts will occur Sunday due to a combination of accumulating snow, sleet, and light freezing rain. Ice and sleet accumulations up to a few hundredths of an inch are possible, while most locations are expected to see light snow amounts near an inch or less.
The highest snow potential remains north of Highway 2 in northwest Minnesota, where a narrow band of moderate to locally heavy snow could set up. Forecasters say there is about a 20 percent chance of snowfall exceeding two inches in that corridor, particularly toward the Lake of the Woods region. In eastern North Dakota, including Grand Forks, Fargo, and surrounding Red River Valley communities, light icing may be the primary concern, creating slick bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads.
Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check road conditions before traveling. North Dakota Department of Transportation updates are available at 511nd.org, while Minnesota travelers can check travel.dot.state.mn.us. Winter weather impacts are expected to taper off later Sunday evening, though additional advisories could be issued if conditions worsen.
