Bismarck, ND – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for much of northern and central North Dakota as a major snow system moves into the region tonight. The National Weather Service in Bismarck warns of heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel from Monday evening through Tuesday night.
According to the NWS, 4 to 9 inches of snow are possible across areas including Williston, Minot, Bismarck, Jamestown, and Rugby, with wind gusts reaching 40 to 45 mph. These conditions could lead to blowing and drifting snow, creating near whiteout visibility and dangerous driving conditions during both the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes.
The first wave of snow is expected to develop after 6 p.m. CST Monday, spreading southeast overnight. Heavier snow bands will continue into Tuesday morning, tapering off by late evening.
Travelers are urged to prepare for rapidly changing conditions, carry a winter survival kit, and monitor updates as this system develops. Power disruptions and downed branches are also possible due to gusty winds.
