Grand Forks, ND – Severe thunderstorms could return to eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota on Thursday, July 24, bringing another round of damaging winds and large hail, with travel along US-2 potentially affected.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, there is a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening, mainly after 4 p.m. Storms may produce hail over 1 inch in diameter and wind gusts up to 60 mph. Flash flooding remains possible in localized areas. Spotter activation may be needed if storms intensify.
While Thursday begins mostly sunny with a high near 78°F, conditions shift late in the day as storm chances increase. Winds will remain light early, becoming north around 6 mph by afternoon. Drivers on area roads — especially US-2 and US-81 — should monitor conditions closely during the evening commute.
Looking ahead, Friday brings a slight chance of storms after 4 p.m., with weekend activity picking up again Friday night and into Saturday. Saturday night may see another round of showers and storms, particularly after 1 a.m., as moisture returns with southwesterly winds.
The unsettled pattern eases by Monday, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 79°F expected through Tuesday, July 29. Residents are advised to remain weather-aware, keep devices charged, and have alternate plans in case of late-day storms.
