Grand Forks, ND – Scorching heat and severe thunderstorms are colliding across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota today, creating dangerous conditions for millions from Grand Forks to Bemidji.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday, with heat index values climbing as high as 101°F in cities like Fargo, Detroit Lakes, and Grafton. Simultaneously, a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe thunderstorms threatens the same areas this afternoon and evening, capable of producing golf ball-sized hail, 70 mph winds, and isolated tornadoes.
Scattered thunderstorms have already brought rain to Grand Forks Saturday morning. As heat builds into the afternoon, storms could intensify again near Devils Lake, Thief River Falls, and Valley City. Localized flash flooding is also possible due to brief downpours.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, drink fluids, and remain in air-conditioned spaces. Employers should offer shaded rest breaks to outdoor workers and monitor for signs of heat illness.
More storms are expected Sunday with slightly lower risks but gusty winds and flash flooding remain concerns.
⚠️ Storm and heat alerts remain active through Saturday night. Stay tuned for updates from NWS Grand Forks.
