Bismarck, N.D. – Strong storms are expected to move across western and central North Dakota through 4 p.m. Monday, bringing the potential for damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning.
According to the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch (No. 550) is in effect for 16 counties across the state, including Burleigh, Morton, Stark, and Emmons. The watch was issued at 8:25 a.m. CDT and remains active until 4 p.m. CDT today.
Cities like Bismarck, Dickinson, and Mandan could experience gusts over 60 mph and quarter-sized hail as storms develop and push east. Residents in rural counties such as Bowman, Sioux, and Grant should also stay weather-aware, especially while traveling on I-94 or U.S. Route 83.
Emergency managers urge residents to avoid outdoor activities, secure loose objects, and charge mobile devices in case of power outages. Farmers and ranchers should monitor fields and livestock closely as cells move quickly across the open plains.
This storm system marks the return of strong convective activity in the state, with conditions similar to early July’s severe weather stretch.
Additional watches or warnings could be issued later today as storms continue eastward.
