Grand Forks, N.D. – Residents across eastern North Dakota should prepare for a window of severe weather between 3 and 6 p.m. Tuesday as a cold front drops south across the state. The National Weather Service warns that a few thunderstorms could intensify along the front, producing hail up to an inch in diameter and wind gusts as high as 60 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, the risk is isolated, but the strongest storms could develop along the Red River Valley before sliding south toward the South Dakota border by evening. Communities from Fargo to Wahpeton may see the greatest chance of impacts during the late afternoon hours.

Travelers on Interstate 29 should be alert for rapidly changing conditions, including reduced visibility in heavy rain and dangerous crosswinds. The weather service advises residents to secure outdoor items and have multiple ways to receive warnings in case storms intensify quickly. Tornado potential is low, but damaging hail and wind remain a concern.

More storm chances may develop farther south into the evening, but the overall severe threat diminishes once the cold front clears.
