Grand Forks, North Dakota – Severe storms are expected to erupt across eastern North Dakota after 6 p.m. Thursday, bringing the risk of tennis ball-sized hail, wind gusts near 75 mph, and a possible tornado before 10 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, areas under a Level 2 risk—including Devils Lake, Fargo, and Grand Forks—should prepare for scattered but intense storms through the overnight hours. Tornado potential exists, especially early in the evening, and damaging hail and wind are the primary hazards. Some storms could form quickly and with little warning.
Residents are urged to stay weather-aware throughout the night, especially with the threat continuing while many are asleep. Charge phones, enable emergency alerts, and have a way to receive warnings that doesn’t rely on being awake or near a TV. Travel may be hazardous along stretches of I-29 and US-2 where visibility could rapidly drop in heavy downpours and hail.
The severe weather risk decreases toward dawn, but additional watches and warnings may be issued later if storms redevelop.
