Grand Forks, ND – Severe thunderstorms are set to roll across northeast North Dakota into northwest Minnesota Thursday night, bringing the potential for ping pong ball-sized hail and wind gusts topping 60 mph. The National Weather Service in Grand Forks said the storms could begin overnight and persist into early Friday morning, creating dangerous travel conditions and the risk of localized damage.

According to the National Weather Service, the region faces a level 1 out of 5 risk for severe storms, meaning isolated but potentially damaging weather is possible. Storms may redevelop Friday night into Saturday, maintaining the threat of large hail and gusty winds. Forecasters also warn of localized flash flooding through midweek as repeated rounds of rain sweep the area.

Cities including Grand Forks, East Grand Forks, Roseau, Bemidji, and Thief River Falls could see the most disruptive impacts, with hail potentially damaging vehicles and crops. Emergency managers urge residents to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and keep phones charged in case of power outages.

The severe weather pattern looks to remain active into early next week, with storm chances returning Sunday through Wednesday. Additional watches and warnings may be issued as the situation develops.
