Grand Forks, North Dakota – Damaging winds and scattered severe thunderstorms are set to threaten communities across western North Dakota and eastern Montana Thursday evening, continuing into the overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, storms are likely to form in eastern Montana and western North Dakota by late Thursday, with the greatest risk for severe weather stretching from Williston to Valley City. Meteorologists warn that wind gusts over 75 mph could bring down trees and power lines, making travel dangerous along I-94 and other major routes.

Hail up to the size of golf balls is also possible, and while high winds remain the main concern, a tornado or two cannot be ruled out. Residents in Grand Forks, Minot, Bismarck, and Fargo are urged to monitor alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings overnight.

Secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and be prepared for sudden power outages. The threat is expected to last through early Friday, and additional watches or warnings may be issued as storms track east.
