Grand Forks, ND – A dramatic temperature drop across North Dakota is setting the stage for potential frost this weekend, as overnight lows dip near freezing by early Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service Grand Forks office, a strong cold front will push through the region following periods of rain late Wednesday through Friday. Rainfall totals could exceed one inch in eastern North Dakota. After the rain, a mass of cooler air will settle in, bringing much colder overnight temperatures Friday through Sunday.

Forecast models show minimum temperatures in the low 30s for cities including Grand Forks, Fargo, Devils Lake, and Hallock late Saturday night into Sunday morning. If skies remain clear, conditions will favor frost development, especially in rural and low-lying areas.

Residents are urged to protect sensitive plants, as frost may damage or kill unprotected vegetation. Gardeners and farmers should take precautions, particularly in regions where the growing season has begun.

This unseasonably cold pattern marks a sharp contrast to earlier highs in the 70s, with Grand Forks, Fargo, and nearby areas expected to see highs only in the 50s by Friday and Saturday. Temperatures are projected to rebound early next week.
