Grand Forks, ND – Residents across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota are enjoying unseasonably warm weather this week, but the National Weather Service says a sharp shift is coming. Temperatures could dip into the 30s by Monday and Tuesday, bringing the first widespread frost risk of the season.
According to the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks, maximum temperatures will run well above normal through Friday, with many communities reaching the low to mid-80s. Fargo, Grand Forks, and Lisbon are all forecast to hit 86–87°F midweek. However, by Sunday, highs fall back into the 50s and low 60s, a 25-degree swing in just days.
The bigger concern comes at night. Forecast lows for early next week drop into the mid-30s in cities such as Cando, Langdon, and Devils Lake, with some rural areas potentially seeing even cooler pockets. That means patchy frost is possible by Monday, October 6, and more widespread frost by Tuesday, October 7.
The transition will be marked by a chance of showers this weekend as the warm air mass breaks down. Farmers preparing for the sugar beet harvest may welcome the cooler weather, which helps storage conditions, but gardeners and homeowners should prepare for possible frost damage to late-season plants.
