Grand Forks, ND – Drivers in Grand Forks and surrounding areas should prepare for dangerous travel conditions early Thursday as strong winds and blowing snow could create whiteout conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin falling Wednesday evening, with winds picking up overnight. By early Thursday morning, gusts could reach 37 mph, drastically reducing visibility and making roads treacherous. Blowing and drifting snow could create near-zero visibility on open highways, increasing the risk of accidents.

The worst conditions are expected between midnight and noon Thursday, particularly along exposed roadways. The North Dakota Department of Transportation advises motorists to check road conditions before traveling and to carry an emergency kit, as wind chills will drop to -19°F.

Five-Day Grand Forks Forecast

Wednesday Night:Snow developing, low of 3°F, winds increasing to 26 mph with gusts up to 37 mph.

Thursday:Patchy blowing snow, high of 3°F, winds 8-15 mph. Conditions improve in the afternoon.

Friday:Mostly sunny, high of 12°F, west winds 5-7 mph.

Saturday:Chance of snow in the morning, high of 11°F, north winds 6-9 mph.
