Grand Forks, North Dakota – A volatile complex of thunderstorms is set to erupt across southeast Montana, northwest South Dakota, and southwest North Dakota late Monday morning, unleashing damaging wind gusts up to 80 mph as it races east-southeast through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, storms are expected to organize and intensify between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., particularly in areas south of I-94, where a Level 3 out of 5 severe storm risk is in place. Widespread damaging winds are the primary hazard, though isolated hail and brief tornadoes can’t be ruled out.

Communities in northern and eastern South Dakota, southeastern North Dakota, and possibly into west-central Minnesota—including Wahpeton, Aberdeen, Jamestown, and Fergus Falls—should stay alert. Power outages, tree damage, and rapid travel disruptions are possible during the evening commute.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, avoid non-essential travel during peak storm hours, and keep mobile alerts turned on. Storm shelters and alternate power sources should be prepared in case of outages.

Severe weather alerts remain in effect through Monday evening, with further updates likely as the storm track becomes more defined.
