Bismarck, North Dakota – North Dakota is facing a dangerous weather double punch, with damaging winds ripping across the state Thursday and a hard freeze looming late Friday night into Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Bismarck, wind gusts topping 60 mph are expected to continue through 9 p.m. CDT Thursday across western and south-central counties, including Williston, Dickinson, and Bismarck. A Wind Advisory is also in effect for areas farther southwest, including Bowman and Medora, where gusts could reach 55 mph.

The wind has already caused hazardous travel conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles along highways like U.S. 85 and I-94. Downed tree limbs, damaged outbuildings, and unsecured objects being blown around are all risks through Thursday evening.

Once the winds subside, overnight temperatures are expected to drop sharply. A Freeze Watch has been issued for much of the state from late Friday night through Saturday morning. Lows could fall to 28°F in some areas, threatening unharvested crops and sensitive vegetation. Residents should take immediate steps to protect gardens, flowers, and agricultural assets.

Wind alerts expire by Thursday night, but freezing temperatures remain the next critical concern heading into the weekend.
