Grand Forks, North Dakota – Roads across eastern North Dakota could become snow-covered within hours Friday evening as snowfall rates approach 1 inch per hour, quickly reducing visibility and making travel dangerous along major corridors.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a stronger second system will spread into southeast North Dakota and northwest Minnesota by late afternoon, with the heaviest snow falling between late Friday night and early Saturday morning. Snow will taper from west to east by Saturday afternoon.

Cities including Fargo, Grand Forks, Wahpeton, and Devils Lake are expected to see widespread totals between 6 and 13 inches, with locally higher amounts possible in bands of heavier snow. Portions of northwest Minnesota, including Thief River Falls and Bemidji, could also see significant accumulation.

I-29 and Highway 2 may become slick and snow-packed, with rapid accumulation on untreated roads. Blowing snow could further reduce visibility, especially in open areas.

Drivers are urged to avoid overnight travel, keep emergency kits in vehicles, and check 511 road conditions before heading out. Conditions will gradually improve Saturday afternoon, but additional advisories may be issued as the storm evolves.
