BISMARCK, N.D. – A powerful autumn windstorm will sweep across North Dakota and parts of northwest Minnesota Sunday, bringing widespread gusts over 50 mph, blowing dust, and a risk of isolated power outages. The National Weather Service offices in Bismarck and Grand Forks have extended Wind Advisories through late Sunday night for nearly all of the state and adjacent Minnesota counties.

According to the NWS, sustained west to northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts reaching 50 to 55 mph will develop by midmorning, shifting from the south early to the west by afternoon. The strongest winds are expected in north-central and northwestern counties — including Minot, Williston, Rugby, and Devils Lake — while gusts near 45 mph are likely in the Fargo and Grand Forks areas.

Forecasters warn that unsecured outdoor objects may be blown around, and minor tree damage or power flickers could occur. Drivers of semis, RVs, and other high-profile vehicles should use caution on Interstates 29 and 94, where strong crosswinds may make travel difficult. Visibility could also briefly drop in areas of blowing dust west of Bismarck and Jamestown.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol advised motorists to delay towing or hauling if possible until winds ease late tonight. Residents should secure lawn furniture, trash bins, and harvest equipment before leaving them unattended.

Winds will diminish overnight, with calmer and cooler weather expected Monday morning.
