Bismarck, N.D. – A tornado watch is in effect for much of North Dakota until 1 a.m. Saturday as a powerful storm system pushes across the region, bringing the threat of tornadoes, large hail, and damaging wind gusts.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 468 includes 31 counties spanning central, north-central, and western North Dakota, including Burleigh, Ward, Morton, and Stark counties. The watch was issued at 5:20 p.m. CDT Friday and covers areas from Minot to Bismarck to Jamestown.

Storms capable of producing funnel clouds and brief tornado touchdowns are expected to move northeast through the evening. Residents in cities like Devils Lake, Williston, Dickinson, and Rugby should prepare for sudden changes in weather and take shelter if warnings are issued.

Wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to golf-ball size are possible, especially in open plains and along major routes like I-94 and U.S. Highway 83. Emergency officials recommend securing outdoor items, charging phones, and reviewing tornado safety plans before nightfall.

The tornado watch remains in effect until 1 a.m. CDT. Additional warnings may follow as the storm system intensifies overnight.
