Bismarck, ND – Much of central and northwest North Dakota remains under a Winter Weather Advisory today as steady snow, strong winds, and rapidly changing road conditions affect travel across the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Bismarck reports that snowfall and blowing snow will continue through midnight Tuesday, creating hazardous conditions on rural highways and major corridors.
According to the NWS, widespread snow is ongoing across areas including Williston, Minot, Jamestown, Bismarck, Dickinson, McKenzie County, Burke County, Mercer County, and the James River Valley. Total accumulations are expected to reach 4 to 9 inches by late tonight. Winds gusting up to 45 mph will produce areas of blowing snow, significantly reducing visibility—especially on open stretches of road.
The advisory, which began Monday evening, will continue to affect the Tuesday morning commute, with the potential for slick roads, drifting snow, and sudden visibility drops even in areas receiving lighter snowfall. The NWS urges drivers to slow down, leave extra stopping distance, and be prepared for icy conditions on sidewalks, driveways, and untreated surfaces.
Blowing snow is expected to be most intense in northwestern counties including Divide, Burke, and Williams, as well as central counties such as Kidder, McLean, and Sheridan. Communities including Bismarck, Minot, Watford City, Jamestown, and Carrington are all under the advisory.
Residents traveling today are encouraged to check updated road conditions by calling 511 before heading out. Travel disruptions are possible through tonight as the system exits the state.
