Fargo, North Dakota – Severe thunderstorms threaten much of eastern North Dakota this evening into overnight hours, with tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds all possible. Motorists and residents from Grand Forks to Fargo should prepare for rapidly changing weather and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, an elevated risk for isolated to scattered severe storms covers the Red River Valley and much of the eastern part of the state through early Wednesday. Hazards include tornadoes, hail up to two inches in diameter, and wind gusts reaching 70 mph. The greatest threat period runs from late Tuesday through the overnight hours.

Cities at highest risk include Fargo, Grand Forks, Wahpeton, and Devils Lake, along with major routes like I-29 and U.S. Highway 2. Power outages and tree damage are possible, and driving may become dangerous due to sudden heavy downpours or debris. Stay indoors during warnings and keep mobile devices charged in case of emergencies.

Residents in affected counties are urged to remain weather aware, monitor local alerts, and review shelter plans. This round of severe weather follows a calmer start to July but matches the region’s historical peak for summer storms.

Threats may persist into early Wednesday. Additional watches and warnings could be issued overnight as storms develop.
