Bismarck, N.D. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to sweep across central North Dakota this afternoon and evening, bringing the risk of damaging winds, large hail, and brief power outages to cities including Bismarck, Mandan, and surrounding counties.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for Adams, Burleigh, Emmons, Grant, Hettinger, Mercer, Morton, Oliver, and Sioux counties until 9 p.m. MDT Wednesday. The main threats include wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail up to one inch in diameter, and frequent lightning. The watch area covers much of central and south-central North Dakota, with storms most likely between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Drivers along I-94 and Highway 83 should watch for sudden downpours and debris on the road. Local emergency management agencies recommend residents move vehicles indoors, secure outdoor items, and keep cell phones charged in case of power outages. School events and outdoor activities in Burleigh and Morton counties could face last-minute delays or cancellations.
This is the first severe thunderstorm watch of July for much of the region, coming on the heels of an unusually dry June. Similar storms last year led to scattered outages and minor property damage.
Severe thunderstorm warnings may follow if storms intensify. Stay tuned for updates and additional alerts as storms develop through tonight.
