Bismarck, ND – Severe thunderstorms are expected to continue to impact large areas of western and central North Dakota this evening, prompting a severe thunderstorm watch that will remain in effect until 1 a.m. Monday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of hazardous weather, including heavy rain, strong winds, and possible hail, which could disrupt travel and outdoor activities across the region.
According to the NWS, the severe thunderstorm watch now includes nine counties in the western part of the state and has been extended to include two additional counties in the south-central region. Affected areas include McKenzie, Adams, Billings, Bowman, Dunn, Golden Valley, Hettinger, Slope, and Stark counties, as well as Grant and Sioux counties. This means cities like Beach, Bowman, Dickinson, and Watford City are all under heightened storm risk through the night.
Local residents in the impacted counties are advised to remain alert to rapidly changing conditions. Gusty winds of up to 60 mph and large hail could cause damage to vehicles, crops, and outdoor structures. Drivers should exercise caution when traveling, especially on rural roads and highways, which may experience reduced visibility due to heavy rain and blowing debris.
The severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 1 a.m. Monday, but additional warnings or watches could be issued if conditions worsen. Residents should monitor local weather updates for any changes.
