North Dakota wakes to a deep, cracking cold that silences streets and turns every breath sharp. Metal groans, eyelashes frost, and even short walks feel risky.

North Dakota and northwest Minnesota remain under a powerful Winter Weather pattern early today as an Arctic Blast settles in. According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning, with wind chills dropping as low as 40 degrees below zero. Frostbite can develop on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

In Grand Forks and East Grand Forks, temperatures sit near 10 below zero, with light winds still driving dangerously low wind chills. Roads appear dry in places, but compacted snow and ice linger on residential streets and ramps. Drivers should slow down on I-29, Highway 2, and river crossings where refreezing happens fast.

A few light snow showers are possible today, though accumulation stays limited. The main concern remains exposure and flash freezing as any daytime melting locks up again after sunset. Pets should stay indoors, and residents are urged to check on neighbors who may need help staying warm.

Tuesday brings sunshine but little warmth. Highs struggle into the single digits, with subzero wind chills during the morning commute. Conditions slowly improve Wednesday as highs edge toward the teens. Even then, nights remain bitter, and untreated roads can stay slick.

Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook points to lower precipitation chances and a gradual temperature recovery late week into early February, though readings remain below normal for this time of year.

Winter is in full command today. How cold did it feel when you stepped outside this morning?
