Grand Forks, North Dakota – A surge of Arctic air is set to bring some of the coldest conditions of the season to eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota, creating a serious risk to anyone spending time outdoors late this week. Wind chills will plunge to dangerous levels, with frostbite possible in minutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from late Wednesday night through Thursday midday as wind chills drop as low as 34 below zero. Conditions worsen further beginning Thursday afternoon, when an Extreme Cold Watch takes effect and continues through Sunday morning. During that period, wind chills could fall as low as 52 below zero across parts of the region.

Cities including Fargo, Grand Forks, Moorhead, Bemidji, Detroit Lakes, Valley City, Crookston, and Thief River Falls are expected to feel the brunt of the cold. Even short exposure could become dangerous, especially during the overnight and early morning hours. Rural areas and open roadways will be especially vulnerable due to persistent wind.

Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and fully cover exposed skin. Vehicles should be winterized, emergency kits kept on hand, and pets brought indoors. Schools and local agencies may adjust schedules if the cold intensifies.

The Extreme Cold Watch may be upgraded as confidence increases. Bitter cold is expected to persist through the weekend, with additional advisories likely as the Arctic air mass settles in.
