DULUTH, Minn. – Drivers across northern Minnesota and western Wisconsin will face dangerous travel conditions early Wednesday as dense fog reduces visibility to a quarter mile or less. The National Weather Service has issued dense fog advisories stretching from Duluth and the Iron Range to the Twin Cities metro, with additional warnings across eastern North Dakota and northwest Iowa.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Duluth, Grand Forks, and the Twin Cities, fog advisories remain in effect until 9 or 10 a.m. CDT, depending on location. In Minnesota, cities including Duluth, St. Cloud, Brainerd, Fergus Falls, Bemidji, and Albert Lea are under advisories, while Wisconsin counties along Lake Superior—including Douglas, Bayfield, and Ashland—are also impacted.
The fog extends over Lake Superior, where marine advisories warn of visibility dropping below a quarter nautical mile. Boaters are urged to use fog signals, running lights, and navigation instruments.
Commuters are advised to slow down, use headlights or fog lights, and leave extra distance between vehicles. Officials stress avoiding sudden lane changes and planning for longer travel times during the morning commute.
Dense fog is expected to lift by late morning as winds increase and temperatures rise, but another advisory could be issued if conditions redevelop overnight.
