Grand Forks, N.D. – Temperatures are expected to dip into the low 30s across northern North Dakota tonight, with a freeze watch in effect for Towner and Cavalier counties from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, the coldest conditions will be near the Canadian border, where subfreezing temperatures could damage unprotected plants and sensitive vegetation. The alert warns that additional areas may see temperatures drop to 32°F or lower again Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Residents in Langdon, Cando, and surrounding rural areas should take precautions by covering outdoor plants and disconnecting garden hoses. Cold-sensitive crops may be at risk if left unprotected overnight. While this kind of freeze isn’t unusual in mid-May, officials note the timing could catch some early gardeners off guard.

Temperatures across the region are expected to rebound later Sunday, but forecasters caution that another round of frost is likely before then. Residents are advised to monitor updated alerts and prepare for another potential freeze overnight Saturday.
