Steele, ND – A man from Bismarck died Thursday morning in a crash on Interstate 94 near Steele, while another driver was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the collision happened at 6:40 a.m. Thursday near mile marker 196 on eastbound I-94. Investigators said a 2012 Nissan Versa, driven by a 20-year-old Bismarck man, rear-ended a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek while traveling in the passing lane at a high rate of speed.

Authorities reported that the driver of the Nissan Versa was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene. The driver of the Crosstrek, a 63-year-old man from New Meadows, Idaho, was wearing a seatbelt but sustained life-threatening injuries. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for emergency treatment.

Foggy conditions were reported in the area at the time of the crash, though troopers said road conditions were dry. Agencies responding to the scene included the Kidder County Sheriff’s Office, Kidder Ambulance, North Dakota Game and Fish, Steele Fire Department, Metro Area Ambulance and the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
