Bismarck, ND – Bitterly cold temperatures and wind chills as low as 35 below zero are sweeping across north-central and northwest North Dakota early Sunday. Officials warn residents to prepare for dangerous frostbite risks and frigid conditions until noon.

According to the National Weather Service, the affected areas include cities such as Minot, Williston, Rugby, and Bottineau. The cold weather advisory, issued at 12:55 a.m. CST Sunday, cautions residents to limit outdoor activities as frostbite can occur in under 10 minutes on exposed skin.

Wind chills at these levels pose severe risks, especially to those traveling or working outdoors. Emergency officials urge everyone to wear multiple layers, hats, and gloves. For residents using portable heaters, proper ventilation is essential to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sheridan County in Montana also faces extreme conditions. Wind chills as low as 30 below are expected through Monday morning. The advisory, issued early Saturday, emphasizes that prolonged exposure can lead to hypothermia.

Residents in both states are advised to check on vulnerable neighbors, ensure pets have adequate shelter, and delay non-essential travel. Local agencies are monitoring the situation and may establish warming centers if needed.

Those traveling should pack emergency kits, including blankets, flashlights, and food. The forecast predicts slight improvement by Monday afternoon as temperatures rise slightly, though cold conditions will persist.
