Grand Forks, ND – Residents across North Dakota and parts of Minnesota are bracing for life-threatening cold temperatures and wind chills that could reach as low as -55 degrees through Tuesday. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning starting this evening, urging residents to limit time outdoors and protect exposed skin, as frostbite can occur in under 10 minutes.
According to the National Weather Service, this weekend’s frigid conditions are expected to worsen on Sunday and Monday, with overnight lows dropping to -28°F in some areas. Daytime highs will struggle to reach -10°F, accompanied by winds of 20-30 mph, making travel hazardous and outdoor activities extremely risky.
The advisory also includes warnings for increased risks of hypothermia and frostbite for anyone exposed to the cold. Drivers along Highway 2 and I-29 are advised to exercise caution as the extreme temperatures could impact vehicle performance, including battery failure.
Monday evening will likely bring the coldest temperatures of the week, with forecasts predicting lows near -22°F in East Grand Forks. Relief is expected starting late Tuesday as temperatures climb into the teens and 20s, although a slight chance of snow is anticipated on Wednesday.
Residents should check local weather updates regularly and take necessary precautions, including keeping emergency kits in vehicles and ensuring adequate heating sources at home.
