Grand Forks, ND – A widespread frost and freeze are expected this weekend as temperatures across the region drop rapidly. Residents and travelers should prepare for colder conditions beginning Saturday evening, continuing through Sunday and Monday. The National Weather Service warns that roads like I-29 may experience icy patches by Sunday night, making travel hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will plummet after a mild Friday, with a likelihood of frost and freeze impacts for Sunday and Monday. Saturday will bring scattered showers across Northwest Minnesota, leading to breezy and cooler conditions, with highs dropping to the low 50s by Sunday. Overnight lows are expected to fall between 25-32°F, posing a risk to outdoor plants and uninsulated pipes.

Travelers should take extra precautions on major roads, such as I-29 and U.S. Highway 2, as wet roads combined with freezing temperatures could lead to dangerous driving conditions. Residents are urged to cover or bring inside any vulnerable plants and ensure that outdoor faucets are insulated to prevent pipe damage.

The coldest temperatures are expected Sunday night into Monday morning, with lows reaching the mid-20s across the region. After the freeze, Monday will bring clear skies, but the chilly weather will persist, with highs only reaching the upper 40s.

Local farmers should prepare for potential crop damage, while city officials recommend residents ensure homes are winterized ahead of this early cold snap. Warmer weather is expected to return by midweek, but the next few days will test both residents and infrastructure.
