North Chicago, IL – Ahead of Thanksgiving travel, the North Chicago Police Department is joining the Illinois State Police and other agencies in ramping up DUI and seat belt enforcement through Dec. 2.

According to Officer Gary Grayer, the department’s “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaigns will focus on seat-belt violations, speeding, distracted driving, and impairment from alcohol or drugs, including cannabis.

“Thanksgiving brings more vehicles, longer trips and more festivities,” said Chief Lazaro Perez. “Seat belts remain one of the simplest and most effective ways to save your life in a crash. We’re asking every driver and passenger to buckle up—every trip, every time—and to make a plan for a sober ride before the celebrations begin.”

Police urge residents to plan ahead by choosing a sober driver, using public transit or rideshare apps, and ensuring everyone in the vehicle is buckled up. Those hosting gatherings are encouraged to offer non-alcoholic options and help guests arrange safe transportation.

Drivers who spot an impaired motorist are advised to pull over safely and call 911.

This year’s campaign is supported by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation and aligns with statewide efforts under “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Click It or Ticket,” and “It’s Not a Game.”
