La Crosse, WI – Dense fog is settling across parts of north-central Wisconsin early Wednesday, creating potentially hazardous driving conditions before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 8 AM Wednesday, covering Clark and Taylor counties, including the communities of Medford and Neillsville. Visibility may fall to one-quarter mile at times as fog thickens overnight.
Forecasters say fog formed rapidly under clear skies and calm winds Tuesday night, allowing moisture to settle close to the surface. These conditions are expected to hold through early morning, especially along rural corridors, wooded areas, and low-lying terrain.
According to the NWS, drivers should anticipate reduced visibility along major roadways such as WI-73, WI-95, WI-29, and surrounding county highways. Visibility may fluctuate quickly from clearer stretches to dense fog patches, making it challenging to judge braking distances.
The fog may also linger slightly longer in valleys and agricultural areas, where colder overnight temperatures help trap humidity at ground level. Although no freezing fog is explicitly mentioned in this advisory, forecasters note that drivers should remain alert for slick spots on bridges or elevated surfaces.
Conditions should gradually improve after 8 AM as sunlight helps lift the fog and visibility returns to more normal levels.
Motorists are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and leave extra travel distance until fog dissipates.
