SPOKANE, Wash. – A strong early-season storm is blanketing the North Cascades of Okanogan County with heavy, wet snow this weekend, creating treacherous travel for those crossing Washington Pass and nearby high mountain routes. The National Weather Service in Spokane said a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 p.m. PDT Sunday for western Okanogan County, including the Highway 20 corridor.

According to the Weather Service, snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are likely between 4,000 and 5,000 feet, increasing to 8 to 16 inches above 5,000 feet, with Washington Pass expected to receive the highest totals—potentially more than a foot of snow by Sunday evening. Windy conditions and bursts of heavier snowfall could lead to rapidly changing visibility.

The Washington State Department of Transportation warned travelers to carry traction tires and chains, and to prepare for extended delays or closures as crews work to keep Highway 20 open. Motorists are urged to slow down and avoid nighttime travel when snowfall rates peak.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will continue through Sunday evening before tapering overnight. Temperatures will stay below freezing at higher elevations, keeping roads icy into Monday morning.
