WINTHROP, Wash. – An early-season snowstorm is bringing winter conditions to the North Cascades, with several inches expected to accumulate on high mountain passes through Monday morning. The National Weather Service in Spokane has continued its Winter Weather Advisory from 8 a.m. Sunday through 11 a.m. Monday for elevations above 3,000 feet in western Okanogan County, including Washington Pass and Loup Loup Pass.

According to the NWS Spokane office, snow totals will range up to 4 inches between 3,000 and 4,000 feet and 4 to 10 inches above 4,000 feet. The heaviest snow is likely along the Cascade crest. Breezy mountain winds will create wind chills in the teens and occasional whiteout conditions at higher elevations.

The Washington State Department of Transportation warned drivers to expect slippery and snow-covered roads along Highway 20 and Highway 153. Motorists are urged to slow down, keep headlights on, and allow extra travel time through the mountain corridors. Backcountry travelers should prepare for rapidly deteriorating conditions Sunday evening, with reduced visibility and falling temperatures.

Officials recommend postponing nonessential mountain travel until late Monday morning when the system begins to weaken. Those who must drive should carry emergency gear, including blankets, food, water, and a flashlight, in case of delays or road closures.

Skies will gradually clear Monday afternoon, though icy spots will linger on shaded roads into Tuesday morning.
