Wellsboro, Pennsylvania – Drivers across north-central and western Pennsylvania could face slick roads and dangerous cold starting late Wednesday as rain rapidly changes to snow, followed by plunging temperatures and biting winds overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect beginning Wednesday afternoon or evening for Potter, Tioga, Sullivan, McKean, Warren, Cambria, and Somerset counties. Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected in most areas, with 3 to 5 inches possible in Warren County. The snow will intensify after sunset as colder air pours in from the northwest.

In the northern tier, including Coudersport, Wellsboro, Mansfield, Bradford, and Warren, rain will transition to snow late Wednesday afternoon, continuing overnight and tapering to snow showers Thursday. Temperatures will drop sharply into the mid-teens by early Thursday, with wind chill values ranging from 5 below to near zero. Gusty northwest winds will reduce visibility at times and worsen travel conditions during the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes.

Farther south in Cambria and Somerset counties, including Johnstown and Somerset, snow showers will linger through Thursday afternoon with gusts up to 40 mph. Wind chills there are expected to fall into the negative single digits early Thursday.

PennDOT urges motorists to slow down and adjust speeds to changing road conditions. Travel impacts may continue into Thursday afternoon, especially on untreated roads and higher elevations, with additional snow showers possible into Thursday night.
