Hastings, Nebraska – Drivers and residents across Nebraska should brace for a dangerous combination of extreme heat and severe thunderstorms Tuesday evening, with damaging winds possible as a cold front moves in. High temperatures could reach 100° in some areas before storms arrive late in the day.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a complex of thunderstorms is expected to develop over north-central Nebraska Tuesday afternoon and sweep southeastward during the evening. Most of the state remains under a slight risk for severe weather, with high winds posing the greatest threat. Forecasters urge caution on area roadways, especially along US-281 and I-80, as storms may arrive quickly with little warning.

Communities from Grand Island to Kearney and south toward Hastings may see the most severe impacts, including wind gusts up to 60 mph and brief power outages. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during storms. Cooler air will move in behind the front late Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing relief from the heat and a chance for scattered showers—especially Wednesday evening.

Thunderstorm chances taper off by late week, but officials advise staying alert for updated warnings and possible new advisories.
