North Platte, Nebraska – Snow will begin stacking up across north central and western Nebraska late tonight, with up to 8 inches possible by Thursday afternoon and blowing snow reducing visibility on open highways.

According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late tonight through Thursday afternoon for Sheridan, Eastern and Western Cherry, Grant, Hooker and Thomas counties. Forecasters expect 4 to 8 inches of accumulation, with locally higher totals possible. North winds may gust to 35 mph, leading to drifting snow and sudden drops in visibility.

Communities including Valentine, Gordon, Rushville, Thedford, Mullen and Hyannis sit in the potential corridor for heavier snowfall. Open stretches of Highway 83, Highway 61 and rural Sandhills roads could see blowing snow pile into drifts, especially during the Thursday morning and evening commutes.

Snow-covered roads and reduced visibility may make travel difficult for school buses, ranch traffic and long-haul trucks crossing the region. Drivers should consider adjusting plans, allow extra time and keep winter emergency kits in their vehicles.

Forecasters caution that snow totals could shift as the storm track becomes clearer. The watch may be upgraded to a warning if confidence increases later today.
