An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect for portions of north-central Montana from 10 a.m. Saturday through 11 a.m. Sunday, with dangerously low wind chills expected to create life-threatening conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Great Falls, wind chills as low as 40 below zero are forecast across Hill County, Northern Blaine County, Southern Blaine County, and the Bears Paw Mountains. Communities included in the warning area include Havre, Chinook, Harlem, Zurich, Hogeland, Rocky Boy, and Fort Belknap.
Forecasters warn that exposure to these conditions can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes, with an increased risk for those spending extended time outdoors or lacking adequate cold-weather protection.
The extreme cold is expected to persist through Saturday night before gradually easing later Sunday morning. Even brief outdoor exposure during the warning period could become dangerous without proper precautions.
The National Weather Service urges residents to dress in layers, including hats, face masks, and insulated gloves, if going outside is unavoidable. Officials also recommend checking on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, young children, and those without reliable heating.
Travelers and outdoor workers are advised to plan ahead, limit time outdoors, and ensure vehicles are equipped for extreme winter conditions during the warning period.
