KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A crisp fall chill will grip northern Missouri again tonight, with temperatures dipping into the low and mid-30s and patchy frost forming across rural areas by daybreak Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Frost Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday, and another advisory is posted from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday for much of northern and north-central Missouri. The advisory covers Atchison, Nodaway, Worth, Gentry, Harrison, Holt, Mercer, Putnam, Adair, Livingston, and Linn Counties, including Maryville, Trenton, Kirksville, Chillicothe, and Albany.
Forecasters warn that sensitive vegetation could be damaged or killed if left uncovered. Residents are urged to cover plants, bring potted flowers indoors, and disconnect outdoor hoses ahead of the chill. According to local emergency management officials, the coldest readings are expected in sheltered valleys and rural fields along U.S. Highways 36 and 63.
Motorists may encounter frost-covered windshields early Thursday, and some bridges could become slick before sunrise. The region will warm slightly by afternoon under sunny skies, with highs reaching the mid-50s.
According to the NWS, more seasonal weather will return by the weekend, with overnight lows remaining near freezing and a brief warmup possible early next week.
