Kirksville, Mo. – Residents across north-central and northeast Missouri should prepare for possible flooding through Monday afternoon as thunderstorms bring heavy rain to the region. Low-lying roads and small creeks may flood as runoff builds through early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 p.m. Monday for Putnam, Schuyler, Sullivan, Adair, Linn, and Macon counties. Periods of strong thunderstorms overnight into Monday morning could produce several inches of rainfall in a short time, increasing flood risk in flood-prone areas.
Kirksville, Macon, Unionville, and Brookfield are among the cities that could see flooded roadways, especially along low-lying routes and near creeks like the Chariton and East Locust. Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads and monitor emergency updates. Flash flooding is especially dangerous at night when visibility is reduced.
This marks one of the more widespread flood watches in northern Missouri this summer, with similar conditions last seen in June 2023. Residents should charge phones, clear drains, and prepare to move to higher ground if conditions worsen.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 p.m. Monday, with additional warnings possible depending on rainfall totals overnight.
