Beloit, Kansas – Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly across north-central Kansas beginning Friday afternoon as a winter storm spreads steady snowfall across the region, impacting roads through early Sunday. Drivers could encounter slick highways and reduced visibility during the Friday evening commute, with the worst conditions developing overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from Friday afternoon through early Sunday morning for Mitchell, Osborne, and Rooks counties. Snowfall totals are expected to range between 5 and 8 inches, with the most significant impacts likely Friday night into Saturday afternoon.

Snow will begin developing around midday Friday, becoming steadier into the evening hours. Northeast winds may gust near 20 mph Friday afternoon and evening, though blowing and drifting snow should remain limited as winds weaken overnight. Even so, untreated roads could quickly become snow-packed, especially on rural highways and secondary roads across north-central Kansas.

Kansas Department of Transportation crews are preparing for extended operations, but residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, especially Friday night. Those who must drive should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight. Road conditions can be checked by calling 511. The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through early Sunday, with improving conditions expected after snowfall tapers off.
