Smith Center, Kansas – Drivers across north central Kansas and south central Nebraska could hit slick spots before sunset as mixed precipitation moves across the region through 6 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Smith, Jewell, Osborne and Mitchell counties in Kansas, along with Webster, Nuckolls, Thayer, Clay and Fillmore counties in Nebraska. Snow and sleet totals should remain under 1 inch, but freezing rain may leave a light glaze of ice on untreated roads.

Even a thin coating can freeze bridges first along U.S. Highway 36 near Smith Center and Mankato, U.S. 81 through Belleville and Hebron, and Nebraska Highway 14 near Clay Center and Geneva. Road conditions may vary sharply from town to town, with some areas seeing minimal impact while others turn slick quickly.

State transportation officials urge motorists to slow down, increase following distance and check 511 for real-time road reports. The advisory expires at 6 p.m., but isolated slick spots could linger into the evening if temperatures hover near freezing.
