Indianapolis, Indiana – Heavy downpours and lightning are sweeping across the Indianapolis Metro area Tuesday afternoon, with scattered thunderstorms expected to continue into the evening, raising concerns for flash flooding and travel delays.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, storms are currently developing across Central and North Central Indiana, bringing brief but intense bursts of heavy rain and frequent lightning. Some localized areas may experience isolated flash flooding as storm cells train over the same locations.
Cities including Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, and Zionsville are already seeing storm activity, with radar showing additional development expected through 9 p.m. Farther north, Kokomo and Muncie may also be impacted as storms continue to build.
Residents should avoid low-lying roads and monitor local alerts, especially near flood-prone intersections. Power outages are possible due to lightning and downed limbs.
While these are not widespread severe storms, the combination of saturated ground and quick rainfall rates could overwhelm drainage in urban areas. Drivers are urged to slow down and keep extra distance during heavy downpours.
More thunderstorms are likely into the evening, and additional advisories may be issued if flooding worsens.
