Lexington, NC – A Lexington woman was arrested this week after authorities alleged she financially exploited an elder, taking more than $20,000.

According to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, detectives began investigating the case on July 16, 2024, after receiving a report of suspected elder exploitation. Investigators reviewed bank records and interviewed witnesses, which they said substantiated the allegations.

A warrant was later issued charging Sherry Diane Everhart with financial exploitation of an elder or disabled adult in excess of $20,000. On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Everhart was arrested and booked on the charge. She is scheduled to appear in Davidson County Superior Court on August 27, 2025.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that elder financial exploitation is a growing concern, often involving the theft or misuse of money, assets, or personal information. Authorities noted that such exploitation may occur alongside neglect, emotional abuse, or physical abuse.

Law enforcement officials urged residents to report suspected cases of elder financial exploitation immediately. They stressed that older adults can sometimes be manipulated or deceived into giving away money or property, making community awareness and vigilance essential to preventing further harm.

Anyone who suspects an elderly family member, friend, or neighbor may be experiencing financial exploitation is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
